Four Tips to Keeping the Romance Alive for Older Adults

Just because you are getting older doesn’t mean that the romance between you and your significant other should fade. Sexuality is an essential component in life no matter the age, and a recent study even found that more than half of those between ages 57 and 85 that participated are sexually active. If you feel like your relationship’s passion is going down-hill the older you get, consider these following tips to help keep that romance alive.

  1. Switch it Up from the Usual Routine

Everyone uncovers routines as they progress through life, but sometimes we find ourselves in a rut without even knowing it. Instead of doing the same things week-in and week-out, plan something completely out of the ordinary as an all-day event or find something that you both enjoy to act as your new hobby. This can range anywhere from arts and crafts to gardening or even attending rock concerts – whatever it may be, make sure it is something that you both can enjoy and actively participate in.

It truly doesn’t matter what it is – but change it up from your normal routine to “cause dopamine, a ‘feel good’ chemical, ” When this happens, we are feeling just as we did during the initial infatuation period of a relationship and can provide that extra push you needed to spark up some romance you have been searching for.

  1. Get a Good Night’s Sleep Together

Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep - especially because it gets more difficult as you age. As women age and experience menopause, the process is oftentimes accompanied by insomnia. To make matters worse, when men get older, they become more likely to snore - which isn’t going to help anyone sleep in this situation. When couples are sleep deprived it can cause irritability, reducing the probabilities of romance when in bed.

There are several ways to increase your chances of getting a better night’s sleep as you age, and a lot of times it comes down to your mattress. If you’re a light sleeper and often wake up when your partner shifts or leaves the bed, consider a memory foam mattress that reduces motion transfer and leaves you feeling well rested and energized in the morning. This way your sleep will be maximized, and you will reduce some of that irritability that you’re feeling towards one another due to lack of Zzzzs. 

  1. Take Nightly Walks After Dinner

Share some time together after dinner by going for a walk rather than sitting down and zoning out in front of a television. This will increase the potential of quality engagement and gives you a great opportunity for some uninterrupted time to catch up on life. Walking after dinner can be beneficial for both members of the relationship, as it can help clear the head and the heart and is a great opportunity to get your significant other’s perspective on different situations going on in your life.

Going on walks to engage in quality communication is a good way to keep spiritual intimacy alive and has an added bonus of being great for your overall health, so go on and get to walking.

  1. Plan for Weekly Date Nights

It doesn’t have to be every evening but shoot for a date night at least once per week to get out of the house and really enjoy each other’s company. As we grow older, we may feel like we’ve had enough dates to last us a lifetime - but think again. Putting in the effort to look nice for each other and enjoying a worry-free night is a great way to remind yourself why you chose him or her to be your significant other all those years ago, and why you are still together today.
