NATIONAL AGING IN PLACE WEEK 2011
 
This year’s National Aging in Place week will be held from October 10 through the 16th.The following will be continuously updated with national events as they are planned, so keep checking back for ideas.
 
Aging in Place Week is in its eighth year. Past events have, and future events should, incorporate business to business, business to consumer, and media events. The goals of these events should focus on chapter fundraising, creating local awareness among seniors, community involvement, and finding new referrals.
 
Some of the past and future promotion ideas presented were:
 
  • The publication of resource guides, highlighting local service providers;
  • Official proclamations from local government;
  • Story placement in local newspapers;
  • Home remodeling events taking place at a senior modified home;
  • A seminar on financial planning for seniors and boomers;
  • Medicare seminars;
  • A Miss Aging in Place contest;
  • Leaflet exchanges with local theaters;
  • A golf tournament where each hole had different sponsor;
  • Bingo with age-in-place product and service prizes;
  • Senior job fairs;
  • Senior "speed dating."

Central Florida Chapter

Home Builders Association of Metro Orlando
 
A daylong seminar entitled "Healthy Homes Make Healthy Communities" with panels that include Secretary Charles T. Corley of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs; Margaret Christenson, president of Lifesase, Inc.; Kim Albritton, CEO of Focus Design Services; and Reverend James McGee, CEO and President of Methodist Oaks and culminating with announcement of the winners of the 2011 Aging in Place Home Design Competition! Florida Aging in Place professionals have competed to design a home featuring creative solutions for safe and independent living. Home designs will be judged prior to the event by a panel of experts and the winner will be awarded at the event. The chosen home design will meet competition requirements specifically for home dwellers that wish to Age in Place in the Central Florida Community.  The purpose of the competition is to increase knowledge and awareness of those professionals who provide Aging in Place (AIP) home designs; generate a multi-disciplinary approach to home design to ensure that all the needs of the homeowner are met and inspire creativity among builders/designers within Central Florida that goes beyond Universal Design (UD) to meet the needs of our local aging community.
 
Greater Atlanta Chapter

In honor of National Aging in Place Week, the Greater Atlanta Chapter will be hosting, along with the Senior Care Network Niche, a Legislative Panel discussion on Aging in Place. Local legislators and councilmen will be part of the panel to share what is expected to be in the upcoming legislative session pertaining to seniors and aging in place.
 
Central Virginia Chapter (Richmond)
October 13, 10 AM-12 PM
The Senior Center, 4200 Innslake Drive, Glen Allen, Virginia
 
 Members will be presenting a free Community Educational Series on Successfully Aging in Place.  As a part of the National Aging in Place Week, October 10-16, they will be promoting "Aging in Place" through a series of community educational programs. These dynamic programs will be designed to engage seniors and their family members of all ages with strategies for successfully aging in place covering Health, Financial and Social issues. Program participants will come away with a better understanding of current and new Medicare changes, How to Win at the Game of Money, and Get Up, Get Out and Get Going- How being Social is Healthy.
 
Minneapolis/St. Paul Chapter
Minneapolis/St Paul is conducting a series of presentations to educate corporate employees and baby boomers sandwiched between care responsibilities for their parents and young adult children.  They also will be producing a cable television program, to be aired on a local channel with about 250,000 viewers, to showcase what aging in place is, and describe how a multi-disciplinary service approach can assist folks successfully age in place.
 
Boston Chapter

The Boston Chapter will put on presentations on five Aging in Place categories: Financial, Healthcare, Home, Legal and Lifestyle. During Aging in Place week, they will be presenting three of them each at ten different senior centers in the Boston metropolitan area including those mentioned above.
 
Orange County Chapter
October 10-16
 
Orange County Chapter members are joining together with members of We Build Together to clean up houses in the Laguna Woods area.
 
Baltimore Chapter

The Baltimore Chapter will have an educational presentation on the value of Aging in Place as well as the available services.   In addition, in November, the members will also participate in the 9th Annual Senior Advocacy Conference: Building for the Future.
 
Rhode Island Chapter
The Rhode Island members will be volunteering to do hands-on work for the Rhode Island Senior Center Association.
 
Long Island chapter
The Long Island members will be presenting their educational presentation on the value of Aging in Place at libraries and churches.

Jackson, MS Chapter
Score A Retirement Touchdown
A Tailgate Party at the City of Brandon Senior Center.

We have 180 mature guests invited for the Tailgate Party.  NAIPC members will have booths set up and will be speaking about their company and how it applies to Aging In Place.  It will be mostly an educational event with lots of fun, food and door prizes added.  Our event is Friday October 14, 2011 from 9:00 -12:00.
