Seniors Embrace Aging in Place – Rismedia

The new catch phrase among homeowners is “aging in place.” Instead of selling their homes and moving into retirement villages or assisted-living quarters, a growing number of older Americans are modifying their homes to make them more user-friendly as they age. Read More

          SENIOR SERVICE PROVIDERS ANNOUNCE
2012 AGING IN PLACE WEEK CELEBRATION

8th Annual NAIPC-sponsored informational event runs from October 15-21

September 25, 2012—The National Aging in Place Council announced today that the 8th Annual National Aging in Place Week Celebration will take place in cities throughout the United States from October 15 to 21.

The purpose of Aging in Place Week is to expand awareness of this contemporary approach to senior living as well as to familiarize seniors and their families about  the extensive availability of a large menu of  in-home services such as geriatric care management, universal design, reverse mortgages and much more.

Local events organized by NAIPC Chapters in cities and regions will focus largely on educating seniors and their families about the services and support available to them to help them remain in their homes for as long as possible.

Scheduled events include:

The Central Florida chapter headquartered in Orlando will present its Fifth Annual collaboration with the local National Association of Homebuilders chapter, a seminar entitled, "Homes for Lifetime Living: Outcomes Through Teamwork," The full day of speakers and discussions features Gail Kohn, founding director of Capitol Hill Village; Gail Matillo, Director of Elder Housing Unit at the Department of Elder Affairs; Doug Heinlein, AARP’s lead volunteer spokesperson; Jeannette Stevens, a professor at Seminole State college; Steve Mickley, Executive director of the American Institute of Building Design and chapter member Laura Capp, Director of the Florida Pioneer Network.

·         The Minneapolis/St. Paul chapter will be conducting educational/outreach presentations  at such diverse venues as the Professional Senior Workers Association, senior community centers, a long term care facility, a large corporate employer, e.g., General Mills headquarters, sponsored by management to educate its employees. We also have created a Chapter-specific, Linked In group to attract others with mutual interests and encourage dialogue and conversation via Linked In. We will be engaging these interested parties via blogspots and posting discussion points on the linked.in page as well.

·         The Atlanta chapter in partnership with CEU Concepts will present a one-day conference for care managers and social workers featuring Dr. Allan Tell, author of Alone and Invisible No More.

·         The Rhode Island chapter is offering senior groups a menu of available presentations and will be participating in the Prime Time Living Senior Expo in Warwick.

·         The brand new Sacramento chapter will be sponsoring a crafts fair at the Club of Westpark, a 55+ community in the suburb of Roseville, where it will give a presentation on the various services available from local aging in place service providers.

·         The Greater Charleston chapter will present a series of Lunch & Learn events at senior centers at which panels of four members present various aspects of the aging in place movement.  Later in the month, the chapter will sponsor an AIP Community Recognition, Education and Celebration Event that includes a keynote address by Charleston mayor Joseph P. Riley.

"A recent AARP report verified that over 90 per cent of America’s seniors prefer to age in place," says NAIPC president Peter Bell.  "By remaining in their homes for as long as possible as opposed to relocating to medical facilities, seniors benefit from a more familiar and comfortable later life and our society as a whole benefits from lower expenses.  Our job is make seniors aware of and provide them access to the growing array of in-home services that make again in place feasible."

NAIPC, a senior service network,  currently includes individual members in most states and 17 local chapters in which in-home service providers in a community gather to network and present events to  increase awareness of this valuable contemporary approach to senior living.
