Four Ways to Keep Up With Your Hobbies

Oct 03 2019

Having a hobby is important for everyone, including older adults. An enjoyable hobby can improve your mental and physical well-being in a variety of ways. There are hobbies that help older adults socialize, but there are also hobbies that are performed alone. Here are four ways to help older adults continue to have a hobby despite the complications of the aging process.

Improving the Body’s Mobility

If an older adult has mobility issues, then the individual may stay at home more, leading to additional physical difficulties. They may need physical therapy to improve mobility, or the individual might require assistive devices that can include using a walker with wheels or a walking stick. Additional ways to improve mobility are having supportive braces for the knees or the ankles. When the mobility issues are solved, an individual can become involved in a hobby that involves physical activity.

Public Transportation

For those who can no longer drive a vehicle, having easier access to public transportation is vital. This can require moving to a new city that has subways or buses nearby. Finding a home or an apartment that is near a bus stop or a subway station can make traveling to other locations easier so that they can participate in hobbies frequently.

Find Ways to Connect to Old Hobbies.

Some hobbies may be too expensive or difficult for an older adult to keep up anymore, but that doesn’t mean they can’t connect to them. You could gift an avid golfer some funny golf outfits to commemorate the sport, or give a former pilot a model airplane. Many hobbies can be kept up in old age, and ones that are difficult for those with arthritis or a wheelchair can still be acknowledged and celebrated. An older adult may like going to watch sporting events that they used to participate in.

Affordable Hobbies

Many are on a strict budget, making a hobby too expensive. However, there are ways to find free or inexpensive places for hobbies. Look for local senior centers that offer a variety of classes at reduced prices. Individuals can also use the resources available at public libraries that  offer free classes or books about hobbies.

Check for Senior Discounts

More businesses are offering senior citizen discounts for a variety of activities. It doesn’t hurt to ask about a discount for the price of the items that you are buying for a hobby or the cost of a hobby class. Always be prepared to show ID when asking for a discount. There are also plenty of activities and hobbies geared specifically for the elderly that older adults can participate in. Take advantage of opportunities in your local area to help you or an older adult in your life maintain precious hobbies and activities.
