Four Ways to Recover from a Slip or Fall as an Elderly Person

Slip and fall accidents are very common among the elderly, and the injuries that come from those mishaps often plague older adults for years. When you grow older, it becomes harder to recover from injuries. Here is a quick glimpse at some tips and tricks that older adults can use to recover from a slip and fall accident as quickly as possible.

Immediately Head to the Emergency Room

One of the most common mistakes that people make following a slip and fall injury is avoiding going to the hospital, and that can result in serious health problems down the line. After a slip and fall accident, the injured party must head to the hospital even if they feel like their injuries aren’t that bad. Their adrenaline could easily mask their pain for hours, and the injury might get much worse during that time.

Work with Rehab Specialists

After being stabilized at the hospital, the injured adult should then head to a spine injury rehabilitation center for long-term treatments. At one of those centers, they will be surrounded by a team of medical specialists who can help them overcome their injury as quickly as possible. A rehab center can provide them with a wide variety of important services, including PRP therapy, trigger point injections, steroid injections, RF ablation and spinal cord stimulation.

Don’t Remain Sedentary

While some patients do need to remain immobilized for a few days, they must begin to move around as soon as they are able to do so. Going for walks, stretching and carrying out physical therapy will improve blood flow to the muscles and break apart lactic acid so that it can be flushed out of the body. Exercising can also trigger the release of serotonin, dopamine and other natural chemicals that suppress pain.

Watch What You Eat and Drink

It will be nearly impossible for the body to repair damage if it isn’t being fueled properly. Most older adults who are recovering from injuries will benefit from a protein-rich diet that is filled with nutrient-dense foods. They should also avoid any foods or beverages that could potentially result in tissue inflammation. That includes sugar, artificial sweeteners, trans fats, refined carbohydrates, processed meats and alcohol. Those foods might slow their recovery or potentially even worsen their pain.

Once recovered from an accident, older adults must continue to remain active if they want to avoid future problems. Strengthening all major muscle groups is one of the best ways to prevent unnecessary injuries.
