Why Is Testosterone Important for Men's Health Even in Retirement Age?

Testosterone is the one hormone that makes a man feel more like a man. It is a hormone that is in adequate supply when men are young and vibrant. As men age, the hormone testosterone begins to dwindle away. By the time a man retires, their testosterone levels can be extremely low. The following reveals why even men of retirement age need sufficient levels of testosterone.
Low Testosterone Equals Low Energy
When a man is young, it seems as if he has unstoppable energy. Yet, as he ages, the drive that once pushed him to perform at a higher level starts to decrease with the dip in testosterone production. This is because testosterone plays a key role in maintaining muscle mass, which in turn helps to maintain higher energy levels. This can also cause significant sleep disturbances, which affects energy levels too. Without adequate energy, men in retirement age tend to feel less motivated and even start to experience depression and weight gain.

Another key sign of low testosterone in retirement aged men is that they experience a continued reduction in muscle mass. This not only aids in energy depletion in retirement, but it also plays a role in reducing a man’s strength too. A Reduced Libido
As low testosterone leads to low energy, less strength and weight gain, this also starts to affect a man’s libido as well. This in turn can lead to even more depression and weight gain creating a vicious cycle that causes many elderly men to become dangerously obese. Not only are they experiencing less of a sex drive as their testosterone levels drop, but they also find it difficult to get and maintain an erection too.
Serious Health Complications
When a person with low testosterone becomes obese, this creates a major cause for concern. Elderly men who are significantly overweight tend to be at a much higher risk for conditions like diabetes and heart disease. To make matters worse, their low testosterone makes them less motivated to want to move around and lose the weight to help mitigate these problems.
Despite how weak, fatigued and unmotivated an elderly man may become, it is critical for them to get their body back in shape. Exercise, eating better and talking with a doctor about low testosterone could mean the difference between having an active retirement versus a less exciting time passing those golden years. While low testosterone is common among retired men, it is a condition that can be treated to help men achieve a better quality of life.
